Statement from Mayor Bigger – Update on COVID-19

Apr 14, 2020

I wanted to reach out and connect with our residents after the Easter long weekend. I am happy to see from reports and observations that traffic is down and so many of the residents in Greater Sudbury are listening to the advice of health officials and keeping inside and when outside keeping a safe distance away from others. I'll be the first to admit this was a difficult weekend. I'm used to seeing my parents, kids and grandchildren - but this weekend I spent some quality time with Lori, my wife and we connected with the rest of our family through video-chats and calls. It was different, but necessary.

I also want to acknowledge that residents are also being very aware of social distancing. 311 continues to be called where there are violations or concerns. Thank you for your concern. I do ask that you only call 311 if the matter is truly pressing. Our call centre staff is dealing with a higher than normal volume of calls, and they have to prioritize and action each call.

Lastly, I will acknowledge the days are getting longer and the urge to be outside is greater. If you're doing yard work, keep to your property. If your kids are outside, make sure they keep space between others. If a park or trail is closed -stay off of it. It's closed for a reason and we are enforcing the rules for those not taking our warnings seriously.

Let's get through this week together. Our efforts are working, we are making progress, but let's ensure our resolve stays consistent and strong for a while longer..
