Statement from Mayor Bigger Regarding the Declaration of Provincial State of Emergency

Mar 17, 2020

This morning Premier Ford declared a state of emergency for the Province of Ontario relating to the COVID-19 virus. I have spoken to staff today and the City of Greater Sudbury will be assembling our Community Control Group to assess the implications for the community this afternoon. I would ask that you please follow the direction of the province at this time, including banning gatherings of over 50 people and the closure of all facilities providing indoor recreation programs, all public libraries, all private schools, all licensed childcare centres, all theatres, cinemas and concert venues, and all bars and restaurants except to provide takeout food and delivery. This is especially important today as there were several events planned for St. Patrick's Day across the city and regrettably, those will have to be postponed. I understand that this is a difficult time for the community, however we need to take all precautions to keep our residents safe. These measures are being put in place for all of our protection. This provincial state of emergency will be in place until March 31st. I thank you all again for your patience and cooperation during this truly extraordinary time.
