Frequently Asked Questions About Lead Filters

How effective is my Brita filter at removing Lead?

The Brita Elite™ Filter removes 99% of lead and reduces the most contaminants vs. other pour-through systems. Patented pleated filter technology allows our Brita Elite™ Filter to last 3x longer, too. https://www.brita.com/why-brita/better-water/

How long will my Lead filter last?

Replace your Brita Elite™ Filter every 120 gallons, or about every 6 months for most households. If you have hard water, you may need to change filters more often. When you install a new filter, use your built-in electronic filter indicator so you’ll know exactly when to replace it. See how often to change other types of Brita® filters.

Can I use a standard Brita filter to remove lead from my drinking water?

No, the standard Brita filter does not filter lead out of water. Find out which Brita models filter out Lead.

Where can I pick up my Lead filter?

Once approved, lead filters can be picked up at the CSC location of your choice.

I lost my filter. Can I get a free replacement?

No. The City does not replace lost or damaged filters. Each applicant is entitled to receive two elite water filters that can each be used for roughly six months at a time, providing a home with a full year of lead protection.

I'm no longer eligible to receive free lead water filters but I still want to purchase filters. Where can I buy them?

Elite water filters are available for purchase through third-party retailers such as Canadian Tire, Walmart, or Amazon. Elite Filters can also be purchased directly through the Brita website.

What is the black residue in the reservoir of my water pitcher?

-          Seeing carbon particles in the pitcher or dispenser after several weeks of use is normal.

Can I get a second Brita filter through the program?

No. Through the Private Lead Service Water Replacement Program, each household that has been approved through the program is entitled to receive one Brita filter. If residents wish to have an additional filter, the resident must purchase the filter at their own expense.

How do I install my Brita Elite™ Filter?

  1. Wash your hands, then remove the filter from the bag.
  2. Hand-wash your pitcher system periodically with a mild dish soap (no abrasive cleaners). Rinse well. Do not wash in the dishwasher.
