Community Celebrates the Opening of Twin Forks Greenhouse

May 8, 2024

Thanks to the hard work of community volunteers, in partnership with the City of Greater Sudbury and Lopes Limited, a new greenhouse now complements a community garden in Ward 8.

The Twin Forks community garden was a collaborative effort between the Ward 8 Community Action Network (CAN), the CAN’s Community Garden sub-committee and the Twin Forks Neighbourhood Association. All produce is shared with the community and organizations like the Food Bank.

In 2023, Lopes Limited generously donated a new greenhouse to support the growth of the garden.

“Thank you to Lopes and the many volunteers who worked collaboratively with City staff to create this great space where residents can come together to plant, harvest and share,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre. “This garden and new greenhouse will help ensure residents can eat healthy, connect with one another and become educated on gardening. It is a wonderful addition to this community.”

“At Lopes Limited, we believe it is our social responsibility to give back to the community,” said President of Lopes Limited Felix Lopes Jr. “This greenhouse represents more than just a place to grow produce. It is a space where our community can come together, learn, and grow in more ways than one. It provides our elders with an opportunity to educate our youth on the importance of a healthy lifestyle and using this greenhouse to nourish not only our bodies but also our minds and spirits.”
The total value of the greenhouse project is more than $50,000. The City’s Healthy Community Initiatives (HCI) Fund and Parks reserve supported installation and fencing.

The City of Greater Sudbury, the Ward 8 CAN, the Twin Forks Neighbourhood Association and special guests celebrated the official opening of the greenhouse with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 8, 2024.
