City Receives Funding to Support Homelessness Services

Jan 18, 2024

The City of Greater Sudbury has received just over $400,000 in additional federal funding to support unsheltered homelessness during the winter, including an overnight warming centre.

Grace Family Church, located at 426 Burton Ave., Sudbury, has been operating as an overnight warming centre under the Extreme Cold Weather Alert program, but effective January 17, is operating the warming centre every night, until April 30, 2024.

The warming centre is open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. and has space for up to 30 individuals.

The overnight warming centre is the first program supported with this additional funding. We continue to work with community partners to implement enhancements to overnight and daytime warming centre options and additional supports for the unsheltered homeless population in Greater Sudbury.

“Thank you to the federal government for this funding through the Reaching Home program. These funds are greatly needed to help support the expansion of the City’s homelessness programs, and the great work our staff is doing to ensure residents have access to housing and emergency shelter during the coldest months of the year.”
– Paul Lefebvre, Mayor, Greater Sudbury

“Our government remains committed to ensuring that no one is left out in the cold. The Reaching Home funding top-up will enable the Grace Family Church to continue to operate as an overnight warming centre, ensuring our most vulnerable have access to safety and support throughout some of the most difficult months. I want to thank the City of Greater Sudbury and the Grace Family Church for working so swiftly and collaboratively to ensure our community has access to services they need.”
– Viviane Lapointe, Member of Parliament Sudbury

“It is great to see how quickly the top up federal funding allocations have been turned into concrete support for those most vulnerable in Nickel Belt - Greater Sudbury. These 30 beds play a critical role in addressing homelessness in our communities. I look forward to seeing other positive outcomes that derive from these funds and from collaborative initiatives.”
– Marc G. Serré, MP for Nickel Belt, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Official Languages
