Temporarily Relocated Crews to Return to New Sudbury Fire and Paramedic Station Early in New Year

Dec 20, 2023

Since October 3, 2023, Fire and Paramedic crews from the New Sudbury station on Leon Street have been providing emergency response services from a temporary location to accommodate renovations to washroom, changeroom and shower facilities.

Phase 1 of construction is expected to be complete in January. Work was delayed to allow our contractor to deal with existing asbestos in the building. The City has been working diligently with our contractor to develop a plan to remove the asbestos and return our firefighters and Paramedics to the station safely. Our contractor has made every effort to minimize delays; they recognize the urgency to complete the project while ensuring the safety of all personnel and maintaining a high quality of workmanship.

As there is no access to washrooms or water during this time, crews have been temporarily relocated as follows:
•    Fire crews continue to provide service to their regular emergency response area from Fire Station 2 in Minnow Lake (144 Second Ave.). This is the closest facility to New Sudbury that can house the extra staff, with trucks and equipment. This temporary location may increase response time by two to five minutes, depending on location.
•    Paramedic Services have temporarily relocated to 1617 Havenbrook Dr. To be respectful of the surrounding residential neighbourhood, Paramedics make every effort to reduce vehicle idling, and they minimize the use of warning systems (flashing lights and sirens) when leaving the station.

Phase 2 of construction is expected to take an additional six weeks but will focus on portions of the building that do not impact staff or service delivery.
