Parents and Tots (Ages 4 months to 3 years)

Regular diapers are not permitted in the water; babies must wear swim diapers. Parents must accompany their child in the pool. Please see Pool Admission Policy, Rules and Guidelines. 

Spend quality time with your child while you both have fun learning and socializing. Through structured in-water interaction between parent and child, we stress the importance of play by developing positive attitudes and skills in the water. We provide Lifesaving Society Water Smart tips on keeping your child safe in any aquatic setting. Certified instructors provide guidance and answers to your questions.

Preschool 1 (Ages 3 to 5)

Children must be 3 years old prior to the first class. Children who turn 6 years old after completing Preschool 1 must register for Swimmer 1.

With the help of our qualified instructors, preschoolers will have fun learning to get in and out of the water. We will help them jump into shallow water. They will try floats and glide on their front and back, and will learn the importance of wearing a Personal Flotation Device. They will also learn to get their face wet and blow bubbles underwater.

Preschool 2 (Ages 3 to 5)

Children must be 3 years old prior to the first class and be comfortable in the water. Children who turn 6 years old after completing Preschool 2 must register for Swimmer 1.

These preschoolers will learn to jump into shallow water by themselves, and get in and get out of the pool while wearing a Personal Flotation Device. They will submerge and exhale underwater. They will also learn to swim with a buoyant aid and work on moving through the water on their front and back while kicking their feet.

While wearing a Personal Flotation Device (PFD), these youngsters get more adventurous with a forward roll entry into the pool. They will also tread water for 10 seconds. They will work on front and back crawl for 5 metres as well as whip kick in a vertical position for 20 seconds with a PFD or buoyant aid.

Swimmer 1 (Ages 6+)

These beginners will become comfortable jumping into the water with and without a Personal Flotation Device. They will learn to open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath underwater. They will gain the skills to confidently retrieve objects from the bottom of the pool. They will work on floats, glides and kicking through the water on their front and back.

Swimmer 2 (Ages 6+)

Children must be 6 years old prior to the first class and have completed Swimmer 1 or Preschool 4 or Preschool 5.

These 2nd level beginners will jump into deeper water, and learn to be comfortable rolling sideways into the water wearing a Personal Flotation Device. They will be able to support themselves at the surface without an aid, learn whip kick in a vertical position with an aid, and swim the front and back crawl to distances of 10 metres.

Swimmer 3 (Ages 6+)

Children must have successfully completed Swimmer 2.

These junior swimmers will learn to kneel-dive and roll into the water. New skills will be introduced such as handstands and in-water somersaults. They will work on the proper mechanics for front and back crawl for 15 metres.  They will also perform interval training 4 x 15 meters using flutter kick while improving endurance.

Swimmer 4 (Ages 6+)

Children must have successfully completed Swimmer 3.

These intermediate swimmers will refine their diving skills. They will wrestle with whip kick, this time learning to perform the kick on their front. They will also learn the next step in breaststroke by practicing drills to work on their breaststroke arms. They will learn to swim underwater and tread water for one minute. As well as learning new skills, they will build their endurance. For this level, swimmers will perform interval training 4 x 25 metres using front or back crawl.

Swimmer 5 (Ages 6+)

Children must have successfully completed Swimmer 4.

These swimmers will master shallow dive entries and cannonballs, eggbeater kicks, and in-water backward somersaults. They will refine their front and back crawl with over 50-metre swims of each. They will also put together the whip kick and breaststroke arms to perform the breaststroke. They will pick up the pace in 25-metre sprints and perform interval training 4 x 50 metres using front or back crawl.

These advanced swimmers will rise to the challenge of sophisticated aquatic skills like compact jump entries, stride entry into deep water, and lifesaving kicks like the eggbeater and scissor kick. They will develop strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25 metres. They will also perform interval training and 300-metre workouts.

Swimmer 7 - Rookie Patrol (Ages 6+)

Children must have successfully completed Swimmer 6.

Swimmers continue stroke development with 50 metre swims of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Lifesaving sport skills include a 25 metre obstacle swim and 15 metre object carry. First Aid focuses on assessment of conscious victims, contacting EMS and treatment for bleeding. Fitness improves in 350 metre workouts and 100 metre timed swims.

Swimmer 8 - Ranger Patrol (Ages 6+)

Children must have successfully completed Swimmer 7 (Rookie Patrol).

Swimmers develop better strokes over 75 metre swims of each stroke. They tackle lifesaving sport skills in a lifesaving medley, timed object support, and rescue with a buoyant aid. First Aid focuses on assessment of unconscious victims, treatment of victims in shock, and obstructed airway procedures. Skill drills develop a strong lifesaving foundation.

Swimmer 9 - Star Patrol (Ages 6+)

Children must have successfully completed Swimmer 8 (Ranger Patrol).

Swimmers are challenged with 600 metre workouts; 300 metre timed swims and a 25 metre object carry. Strokes are refined over 100 metre swims. First Aid focuses on treatment of bone or joint injuries and respiratory emergencies including asthma and allergic reactions. Lifesaving skills include defense methods, victim removals and rolling over and supporting a victim face up in shallow water.

Bronze Star

Requires successful completion of Swimmer 6, Swimmer 7, Swimmer 8 or Swimmer 9

Participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills individually and in pairs. Candidates learn CPR and develop the lifesaving skills needed to be their own lifeguard. This includes a timed 400-metre swim.

Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid/CPR

Must be at least 13 years of age or 12 years of age with Bronze Star certification.

This course teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water-rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows and carries, as well as defence methods and releases in preparation for challenging and risky rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a 500 metre timed swim. Bronze Medallion is recognized as the waterfront supervisory certification for Ontario's Recreational Camp Regulation 568.

Endurance Fitness Swimmer

The Fitness Swimmer program is for swimmers of any age who want to improve their overall physical fitness in the water. Fitness Swimmer provides a structured approach based on accepted training principles and practices including interval training. Participants set their own goals.

Adult Swimming Lessons

Whether you’re just starting out or just want help with your strokes, our adult program is for the young at heart – no matter what your age. Set your own goals. Work with certified instructors to learn to swim, or improve your current swimming ability and water fitness. You will develop water confidence and smooth recognizable strokes good enough for lane swimming and fit enough for the beach. We incorporate Lifesaving Society Water Smart® education in all adult levels.

Special Needs (Starting September 2)

Our pool is open to children and adults with various levels of need. Participants will increase strength and mobility, build confidence, improve coordination and function, and enjoy the water in a fun, friendly and safe environment. Our facility includes accessible change rooms and wheelchair lifts and ramps. Individuals with special needs are integrated into regular programming and may also choose to have private or semi-private lessons. Program and lesson fees would apply.

Public Swim

Family Swim 

Our family swim provides all members of the family the opportunity to enjoy swimming together. Registration is not required. All children must be accompanied in the water by an adult. Adult Swim

Registration is not required. Swimmers must be age 18 and up. There are lanes set aside for those who want to swim laps, as well as a designated space for those who wish to do their own aquatic exercise.

Lane Swim 

Lane swim is open to individuals looking to swim lengths for endurance, fitness and exercise. During designated lane swims, the pool will be divided into lanes and participants are encouraged to swim in the lane that best matches their speed and ability.

Lane Swim Schedule:

Wednesdays: 7:00 p.m. to 7:55 p.m.

Feel Free to Feel Fit  (January to June 19,2017)

Enjoy one free swim each week! After each free swim, speak to front desk staff about free return transportation aboard Greater Sudbury Transit.

Aquacise

No registration required! Aquacise is an instructor-led, low-impact program that provides a full body workout for people of any age. Each session takes place in the shallow end of the pool. Move along to the music and work at a pace that is comfortable for you. Pool noodles and other aquatic equipment are used to ensure a full body workout.  A good comfort level with the water is required.

Aquacise Schedule (Starting September 6):
  • Mondays: 10:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m.
  • Tuesdays: 7:00 p.m.
  • Wednesdays: 10:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m.
  • Thursdays: 7:00 p.m.

AquaTherapy

AquaTherapy is a slow and therapeutic exercise class that focuses on range of movement, stretching, muscle strengthening, and physical rehabilitation. It is geared towards individuals that have arthritis, are recovering from surgery or injury, or have general aches and pains. No registration required.

Deep Water Aquacise

No registration required! Deep Water Aquacise is a full body workout that is done in the deep end of the pool only, while wearing a flotation belt. It offers a more intense workout than the regular Aquacise class. A high comfort level in the water is required.
