Education

The City of Greater Sudbury functions as the regional centre of learning and applied research for northeastern Ontario. Laurentian University, Cambrian College, and College Boreal provide excellent educational services through a variety of full and part-time programs. These programs are complemented by numerous research activities and joint ventures. Community partnering and the formation of innovative partnerships with the public and private sectors have become a major focus for all institutions.

Laurentian University

Laurentian University, a bilingual institution, offers a wide range of programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels, with services and courses available in English and French. The university has one of the best records of applied research among universities of its size, with most of this activity concentrated in the Sudbury region. Laurentian has played a major role in community development with three decades of solutions-oriented research on the restoration of damaged ecosystems, work that has garnered international recognition. Other key areas of research include new mining technology and the unique Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, a $70 million advanced neutrino detector located in a decommissioned mine.

Northern Ontario School of Medicine

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) is a faculty of medicine. The School is a joint initiative of Lakehead University and Laurentian University with main campuses in Thunder Bay and Sudbury, and multiple teaching and research sites distributed across Northern Ontario. NOSM welcomed its first students in September 2005.

Cambrian College

Cambrian College provides students with an extensive variety of courses in applied arts and technology. The College has been a leading postsecondary institution in Northern Ontario since its first classes were held in 1967. The College has a vibrant community of more than 14,000 learners – over 4,500 students in 70 full-time programs, plus over 7,500 students in almost 900 part-time courses/programs. It offers programming at three campuses and serves a student population that is reflective of the rich diversity of today’s global workplaces

College Boreal

College Boreal is a French-language community college that opened in 1995. It has six satellite campuses located across Ontario. The largest of these campuses is situated in the heart of Greater Sudbury. Using state-of-the-art multimedia communications technology, College Boreal has created one of the largest private telecommunications networks in Canada. Using various modes of delivery, this advanced infrastructure allows the college to provide numerous courses and learning opportunities to students across northeastern Ontario. College Boreal offers over 60 post-secondary programs. As well, the college provides numerous continuing education opportunities and adult training programs, both full and part-time.
