How It Works

Each year, local elementary and secondary schools compete for the title of “ugliest schoolyard” in Greater Sudbury.

Prize Package

Winning school(s) receive resources to create an outdoor classroom which includes:

  • five large deciduous trees in raised planters created with large concrete stones. This design provides for seating in a shaded space for outdoor education activities.

VETAC will work with the school to design the project. Local businesses and organizations offer in-kind support and donate equipment and supplies.

If included in the long-range regreening plans, winning schools may also receive support for the creation of schoolyard gardens. The Sudbury Horticultural Society and other community environmental organizations may be able to provide financial or in-kind donations to support schoolyard gardening initiatives. On-site volunteer support may also be provided for planting activities with students, teachers, and parents from the school. This support can be used for the creation of shrub and perennial gardens, vegetable gardens, edible gardens, and/or healing gardens.

Applicants must show:

  • how the project fits into their long-range plans for schoolyard improvement
  • proof of support from the school board and school community

The winning school must commit to:

  • hosting the launch of the project at the school site,
  • erecting a suitable sign on the site which will include the logos of our organization and the sponsors,
  • supporting the project for at least three years.

This contest is made possible through a major financial contribution from Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (Sudbury INO), a Glencore Company.
