Requirements for Fire Safety

  • Tents or canopies used for commercial purposes must be certified as flame resistant or flame retardant.
  • If you are purchasing a product, be sure to specify that it is for commercial use and ask the question whether the supplier can supply certification that it is flame retardant or flame resistant.
  • Fabric must be certified to meet or exceed CAN/ULC-S109, "Flame Tests of Flame-Resistant Fabrics and Films", or NFPA 701, "Fire Tests for Flame Propagation of Textiles and Films." Documentation will be required for approval.
  • CSA-certified electric or propane patio heaters (with a maximum 20 lb tank) may be used provided the heater is at least 3 metres (10 feet) from overhanging trees and the heater is operated to manufacturer specifications.
  • Solid, gel or liquid fuel fire devices are not permitted.
  • An adequate number of fire extinguishers must be readily available. Portable fire extinguishers must be provided at each exit from the tent. Portable fire extinguishers must be U.L.C. listed, with a minimum rating or classification of 2A 10BC. The extinguishers must be mounted so that they are visible and readily accessible at all times.
  • A fire extinguisher must be provided where cooking is taking place, outside of the tent. (Minimum of one extinguisher alkali based 40 BC U.L.C. listed type.)
  • Access to fire exits and outdoor connections for fire suppression must be maintained.
  • If a fire route is occupied by outdoor patios, sidewalk retail and cafés, an alternate fire route must be determined in association with City of Greater Sudbury Fire Services.
