Building Permits

A building permit is required when a patio is constructed more than 30.48 cm (12 inches) off the ground:

  • If a building permit is required, the patio design must be completed by a Professional Engineer or Architect or other qualified professional.
  • Any tent that is 225 square metres (2,420 square feet) or larger requires a building permit and must be engineered. Most tents from rental agencies do come with engineered drawings for erection and anchorage which must be provided as part of the permit application.
  • Fabric must be certified to meet or exceed CAN/ULC-S109, "Flame Tests of Flame-Resistant Fabrics and Films", or NFPA 701, "Fire Tests for Flame Propagation of Textiles and Films." Documentation will be required for approval.
  • Tents must be 3 metres (10 feet) from any other structure and property lines.
