Outdoor Patios and Sidewalk Retail

The City of Greater Sudbury offers a streamlined application process to local businesses with plans for new or expanded restaurant patios and outdoor retail activities.

Business owners who have determined that an outdoor patio will generate positive returns are encouraged to submit their plans online to the City of Greater Sudbury.

Restaurants with existing built-in patios under licence with the City of Greater Sudbury and the Liquor Licence Act are permitted to open without additional approvals.

For additional information, please contact the City of Greater Sudbury by email at sidewalkspatios@greatersudbury.ca or call the dedicated Business Support Hotline at 705-690-9937.

To assist with economic recovery, the City has waived the $1.50 per square metre monthly permit fee associated with the set-up of outdoor dining spaces on public properties, along with fees associated with occupying on-street parking spaces.

Each request for a liquor license, whether permanent or temporary, requires approval from the City prior to the AGCO granting the license. The Municipal Clerk must provide approval, and the Fire and Building Departments must review the application.
