Face Coverings and Public Health Instructions

As of Wednesday, July 8, 2020, all commercial establishments in Sudbury and districts are required to ramp up their efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

As part of COVID-19 prevention efforts, Dr. Penny Sutcliffe, Medical Officer of Health for Public Health Sudbury & Districts issued instructions (PDF) to owners and operators of commercial establishments, as well as public transit, to have policies in place to stop people from entering if they are not wearing a face covering.

The instructions are being issued under the authority of the provincial Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (Government of Ontario).

All employers (i.e. anyone responsible for a business or an organization) of non-commercial establishments must continue to ensure physical distancing, use face coverings if two metres distance cannot be maintained, screen for symptoms, and promote excellent hand hygiene practices.

Every commercial establishment (see question 4) must have a policy to stop people from entering inside if they do not wear a face covering (see question 12). Certain exemptions apply (see question 15). The policy is mandatory. If businesses implement their policy in good faith using their best effort, it is up to the business to decide whether to allow entry without a face covering. This approach recognizes that we all have a role to play and it is everyone’s responsibility and in everyone’s best interests to put the brakes on COVID-19.

What does a non-medical mask or face covering do?

A mask or face covering acts as a barrier. It reduces the chance of spreading respiratory droplets to others and prevents droplets from landing on surfaces when you cough or sneeze.

Wearing a non-medical mask or face covering in public or other settings helps stop the spread of COVID-19 in addition to handwashingphysical distancing, and limiting non-essential travel.
