Child Care Ratios

The Day Nurseries Act sets out child-to-staff ratios that must be followed at all times. The younger the children, the lower the child-to-staff ratio will be.

If the group is infant the ratio is one teacher for every three children and the maximum group size is ten children and three teachers.

If the group is toddler the ratio is one teacher for every five children and the maximum group size is fifteen children and three teachers.

If the group is preschool the ratio is one teacher for every eight children and the maximum group size is twenty four children and three teachers.

In licensed home child care, the number of children cared for can be 5 children total:

  • 2 children who are under 2 years of age
  • 3 children, who are under 3 years of age
  • 5 children, who are under 6 years of age
