Fireworks

If you plan on having fireworks, you will need to follow the City’s Fireworks By-Law.

Fire Works on City Property

Any time you plan to discharge fireworks on City property, approval from the Fire Chief and/or designate is required.

Fireworks on Private Property

There are five days of the year in which fireworks can be legally discharged  on private property without prior approval from the City, however you still must have approval from the property owner:

  • Family Day
  • Victoria Day
  • Canada Day (July 1)
  • New Year’s Eve (December 31)
  • New Year’s Day (January 1)

If you want to have fireworks on private property any other day you need permission from the Fire Chief and/or designate.

How to Get Approval for Fireworks

Step One:

  • Get written permission from the owner of the land on which you are planning the display (if it is not your own property).
  • If your fireworks are part of a public special event, please complete a Special Event Intake Form.

Processing Time

Fireworks Application Forms may take up to four weeks to process.

Bonfires

If you are planning on having a bonfire on your property please review our information related to burn permits to ensure you are compliant with the City’s Open Air Burning By-law.

If you are planning to have a bonfire at your special event you will need to ensure you follow the City’s Open Air Burning By-Law and follow these steps:

Step One:

  • You will need to get written permission from the owner of the land on which you are planning on having the bonfire.
  • Submit your letter by email to: phil.doiron@greatersudbury.ca or by mail to

Processing Time

Getting approval from The City of Greater Sudbury Fire Services and the Fire Chief may take up to two weeks.
