Update - Government Road, Coniston

Dec 23, 2015

Further to the traffic update from last night, Government Road in Coniston, at the bridge, remains closed to traffic. Barricades, closure signs and detours are posted on either side of the bridge.

As part of the City's bridge inspection program, the contracted Structural Engineer noted load bearing deficiencies with the bridge on Government Road. The deficiencies are likely due to the age of the bridge (constructed in 1930). As a precaution, and in the interest of public safety, the bridge will be closed until further notice. Staff will prepare a detailed plan on the steps forward, early in the new year. The bridge on Government Road is scheduled to be rehabilitated in 2016.

In the interim, the Greater Sudbury Transit Route 103 Coniston, will be temporarily turning around at the Toe Blake Community Arena. The bus stop near Bryce Street will move to the area near the Arena. There are no other transit stops in the neighbourhood east of the bridge (East Street, Larch Street, Birch Street, Albert Street), so service will not be affected. Pedestrian access across the Bridge will be maintained.

Updates will be provided as information becomes available.
