The City of Greater Sudbury is proud to announce the Canada Green Building Council  (CaGBC) has awarded Pioneer Manor Lodge home areas with a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) "Silver" recognition.  The Lodge at Pioneer Manor is the first long-term care project to obtain LEED designation in Ontario.

The Lodge, home to 64 residents, was designed by Yallowega Bélanger Architecture for the specific needs of residents, including those diagnosed with dementia.  It was constructed to Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care 'A” standards to provide residents with a safer and more home-like environment.

“Our number one commitment is to our residents and their families at Pioneer Manor,” Councillor Ron Dupuis, Chair of the Pioneer Manor Management Committee said. “A big part of that commitment is leading the way in state-of-the-art facilities that enrich their lives.

We are so proud that going the extra mile and making decisions that are cost-effective and future-friendly will continue to benefit everyone who lives, works and visits Pioneer Manor.”

Some of the initiatives implemented in the Pioneer Manor Lodge include:

•    Landscaping – native vegetation requiring less municipal water and maintenance - white concrete pathways using slag to create cooler outdoor spaces for resident comfort – gazebo structures to provide shaded activity areas;
•    Lighting – reduced exterior lighting pollution – provided 30 per cent more efficient lighting;
•    Water – incorporated a plumbing system that reduced municipal water consumption by 30 per cent;
•    Energy –  implemented 30 percent minimum reduction in energy consumption;
•    Materials – high efficient fiberglass windows optimizing solar exposure.
“We are very pleased to have achieved such a tremendous goal,” Brenda Loubert, Director, North East Centre of Excellence for Seniors' Health (Pioneer Manor) said.  “We have all worked so hard to ensure our residents and staff have the best possible environment in which to live and work.”

LEED is a rating system that is recognized as the international mark of excellence for green building in 150 countries.
