Out of the Cold Program to Open on December 1

Nov 28, 2014

The City of Greater Sudbury, in partnership with the Salvation Army and the Red Cross, is pleased to announce the opening of the Out of the Cold Program beginning on Monday, December 1, at 200 Larch Street.

The Salvation Army will assume staffing responsibility for the Out of the Cold Program starting on Thursday December 4, however in the interim the Red Cross will be providing the staffing for the program from December 1 to the 3.

The Out of the Cold Program will provide temporary cots and a warm, safe place to sleep for homeless and vulnerable individuals during the winter months.  The Out of the Cold program will offer services to persons who are under the influence or otherwise disconnected from mainstream shelter services, however alcohol and drugs are not permitted on the premises.

The Elgin Street Mission has extended their operating hours to accommodate those who require warmth from the cold. The Mission will be open from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. 7 days a week until the Out of the Cold Program officially opens its doors.

“The Mission is happy to continue to provide support until the Out of the Cold Shelter is up and running,” said Pastor Rene Souliere from the Elgin Street Mission.

The Out of the Cold Emergency shelter program is an enhancement to the existing 69 emergency shelter beds that the City funds for men, women and children, and youth. The need to increase the diversity of emergency shelter options was identified as a priority in the City of Greater Sudbury’s 10-year Housing and Homelessness Plan.

“I am very pleased that through partnerships with the Salvation Army, Red Cross and the Elgin Street Mission, we are able to offer this service to our most vulnerable population.” Said Catherine Matheson, General Manager of Community Development.

The Out of the Cold Program will operate from 8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. seven days per week until the end of March.

The City continues to work with community partners to coordinate and enhance programs for vulnerable persons in the community.
