The City of Greater Sudbury continues to maintain essential infrastructure during the COVID-19 pandemic. Maintenance includes street sweeping now underway to prepare municipal roads for line painting.

I wanted to reach out and connect with our residents after the Easter long weekend. I am happy to see from reports and observations that traffic is down and so many of the residents in Greater Sudbury are listening to the advice of health officials and keeping inside and when outside keeping a safe distance away from others. I'll be the first to admit this was a difficult weekend.

As a result of extended facility closures and the suspension of non-essential services, the City of Greater Sudbury is taking the difficult step of temporarily suspending the employment of 322 seasonal and part-time staff in affected areas.

Three licensed emergency child-care centres will open in the City of Greater Sudbury to support health care and frontline workers as they continue to provide important services to the community.

Greater Sudbury is a beautiful community with amazing people. Normally and under different circumstances we would have everyone come visit us. But these are not normal circumstances and I have a duty to protect our residents.

Over the past several days, there has been some feedback from members of the community about who to call with complaints related to COVID-19. Beginning immediately, the City of Greater Sudbury is making some changes to make the process easier for residents to navigate.

The City of Greater Sudbury has received more than $320,000 from the federal government to support its COVID-19 response capacity and help prevent the spread to our homeless population.

Today and effective immediately, I have declared a State of Emergency for the City of Greater Sudbury that will be in place for the duration of the provincial state of emergency.  I have reached this decision after careful consideration and conversations with the Medical Officer of Health, my fellow members of council and other local leaders across Greater Sudbury.

The Bell Park Boardwalk, from Science North to McNaughton Terrace, is temporarily closed to further promote physical distancing measures and limit the potential spread of COVID-19 in our community.

Beginning Tuesday, April 7, 2020, all garbage must be placed in a secure, tied bag. Garbage containers that contain loose or unbagged waste will not be collected.

I was saddened to hear of our community’s first fatality with regards to the COVID-19 virus and I extend my condolences to the family at this time on behalf of Mayor and Council. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this extremely difficult time.

In an effort to protect people and communities from the risk of preventable human-caused fires during the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Greater Sudbury, in alignment the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, has implemented an open air fire ban beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, April 3, 2020.

The City of Greater Sudbury is further reinforcing social (physical) distancing measures supported by Public Health Sudbury & Districts by temporarily closing all playgrounds and park amenities, effective immediately.
