What are the rules for election campaign signage?

The City’s Sign By-law 2007-250 outlines the regulations for election campaign signage on private property and is administered by the City’s By-law Department. Election signs cannot be erected until the day after Nomination Day (August 19, 2022). Signs must be removed after Election Day (October 24, 2022).

What information must be contained in a candidate advertisement?

  1. Identification of the candidate.

What information does a candidate need to provide to a broadcaster or publisher?

A candidate must provide the following information in writing to a broadcaster or publisher before allowing their advertisement to appear:

  1. The name of the candidate; and
  2. The name, business address, and telephone number of the individual who deals with the broadcaster or publisher under the direction of the candidate.

What information must be contained in a third party advertisement?

  1. The name of the registered third party;
  2. The municipality where the registered third party is registered; and
  3. A telephone number, mailing address or email address at which the registered third party may be contacted regarding the advertisement.

What information does a registered third party need to provide to a broadcaster or publisher?

A registered third party must provide the following information in writing to a broadcaster or publisher before allowing their advertisement to appear:

  1. The name of the registered third party;
  2. The name, business address and telephone number of the individual who deals with the broadcaster or publisher under the direction of the registered third party; and
  3. The municipality where the registered third party is registered.

Broadcasters and publishers are prohibited from allowing an advertisement to appear if this information is not provided to them.

Please be advised that if a municipality is satisfied that the third party advertising rules have been contravened, as outlined in the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, the municipality may require a person to remove the advertisement or discontinue the advertising.
