The Parks Section, Leisure Services Division, Community Development Department of the City of Greater Sudbury, requires a Parks Small Engine Mechanic.  The successful candidate must possess the qualifications and perform the duties, as set out below. The current rate of pay for this position is $29.23 per hour.


Under the general supervision of the Manager of Parks Services or designate:

  1. Inspect, repair, test and maintain small engines, equipment, and hand tools in use by the Parks Services Section.
  2. Store, issue and receive hand tools, machines, equipment, safety equipment, and maintain a log of all issues and receipts.
  3. Perform routine mechanical and maintenance work on all Parks Services non licensed, mechanical and construction equipment.
  4. Operate various units of CGS Fleet Equipment including farm tractors and attachments, backhoe, ice resurfacer, 4x4 plow with sander, etc.
  5. Develop and maintain a maintenance schedule for all Parks Services equipment.
  6. Purchase supplies and/or equipment as directed by the Manager of Parks Services for the daily operation of the Parks Services garage in accordance with CGS’s policies and procedures.
  7. Load and unload truck by hand or mechanical devices.
  8. Supervise a crew of up to three (3) individuals in the performance of routine duties.
  9. Report conditions of Parks Services equipment to Supervisor when damage or vandalism is observed.
  10. Provide instruction and training in the basic start-up and operation of Parks equipment.
  11. Perform the function of Parks Serviceperson, as required.
  12. Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS's Safety Manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
  13. Perform other related duties as required.


  • Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade 12) Education.
  • Small Engine Repair Certification from a recognized Canadian Educational Institution.
  • Three (3) years experience in a small engine repair shop performing the inspection, repair and maintenance of Parks small engines, equipment and tools.
  • Demonstrate mechanical ability or aptitude.
  • Demonstrate ability to operate tractors with attachments, backhoe, ice resurfacer, etc.
  • Possess a tool kit sufficient to adequately carry out duties and valued at not less than $1,000.00.
  • Capable of maintaining work records and understanding equipment service manuals.
  • Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
  • Satisfactory health, attendance and former employment history.
  • May require the use of a CGS vehicle on CGS business.  Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid driver's licence, and have an acceptable driving record.
