About the Project

Junction East will be a technologically sophisticated, materially beautiful and modern building in Greater Sudbury's historic downtown that will contribute to a vibrant and healthier community. Through innovative physical spaces and dynamic, responsible programming, the new central library and art gallery will improve access to public spaces, and become a civic landmark and centerpiece for Greater Sudbury.

The Central Library will:

Be home to approximately 30 employees and continue to provide centralized services that support all 13 library branches such as, but not limited to:

  • Purchasing and cataloguing print, audiovisual and 3D collections
  • Planning and delivering library programs
  • Providing homebound, interlibrary loan, and reference services
  • Preserving local history and making it accessible to the community at large

The future Franklin Carmichael Art Gallery of Sudbury will:

  • Originate and present innovative exhibitions of contemporary and historical art, design, and craft in all visual media by local, regional, provincial, and Canadian artists in relation to northeastern Ontario’s rich cultural pluralism and histories (Indigenous, French, English, multicultural and newcomer).
  • Collect and preserve artworks of artistic and cultural value for the purpose of making them available for current and future study, interpretation and exhibition.
  • Produce innovative and inclusive art education programs, activities and services throughout Greater Sudbury.
