Dog and Cat Licences
Everyone must register their dogs and cats by January 31.
The City of Greater Sudbury By-law to Regulate the Keeping of Animals and Registration of Dogs and Cats requires every owner of a dog or cat to purchase dog and cat registration tags by December 31 of each year.
All dogs and cats must be registered, within seven days of acquisition, no matter what time of year they are adopted. There is no late charge for newly acquired pets.
A pet registration is valid until December 31. If your dog or cat is caught roaming without a registration tag, the fine is $125.
What is the cost of a dog or cat registration tag?
- Prior to January 31 $30.00
- Dog or cat is spayed or neutered $15.00
- Owner of the dog or cat is 55 years of age or older $15.00
- After January 31 $40.00 ($10 late fee)
- Replacement Tag $ 5.00
- *After October 31 $15.00
*If the applicant became a resident of the City after October 1 in the year of registration or if the dog or cat reached the age of eight weeks after October 1 in the year of registration.
There is no charge to register personal assistance/service dogs with a valid certificate.
Please note that proof of spaying/neutering is required for the reduced fee.
You may purchase a dog and cat registration tags at your nearest Citizen Service Centre, Greater Sudbury Public Library, participating animal clinics, pet food stores and at the Rainbow District Animal Control and Shelter Services. A complete list of locations is available here.
