Queens Athletic Skating Oval Opening Requirements

An ice resurfacer (Zamboni) and other equipment is used to build and maintain the Queens Athletic Skating Oval. Depending on temperature and weather conditions, it takes approximately two weeks to prepare the skating oval. Preparations include packing and levelling the granular track surface and banking snow to hold water. To begin building ice, outdoor temperatures must be below -5 Celsius for multiple consecutive days. A minimum of two inch ice thickness is required for the entire skating surface in order to be safely opened.

The skating oval is historically open anywhere from mid-December to early January and closes in March when conditions are no longer safe or favourable.

Schools and community groups are asked to call the City of Greater Sudbury Parks Services at 705-674-4455, ext. 4578 for reservations.

There’s a new way to register for leisure programs or book a facility. It’s easy to create an account! If you need help getting started, visit our Frequently Asked Questions page.

The French interface of our new registration system is still under development, however it is important that the City goes live with the new system as the existing registration and facility booking system is no longer supported by the vendor. Residents can still receive this service in French by calling 311 to have a French-speaking operator process bookings or registrations. The French interface will be launched in time for the fall/winter registration period.
