Road Construction and Maintenance Updates for August 3

The 2012 capital budget for road improvements in Greater Sudbury is close to $37 million, including $8 million from the Federal Gas Tax Fund. The following projects will be updated on a weekly basis to inform motorists of potential traffic delays or new traffic patterns. Citizens who have questions or concerns related to municipal infrastructure are asked to call 3-1-1 for City information.

NEW:

Installation of new traffic signals will be taking place on Kelly Lake Road at Copper Street beginning Tuesday, August 7th.

Hwy. 17 at M.R. 55, Lively: The Ontario Ministry of Transportation advises motorists of pending ramp closures for bridge and ramp restoration at the intersection of Highway 17 and M.R. 55 near Lively. All ramp closures are scheduled during off-peak traffic hours, between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. The exit ramp from the Hwy. 17 bypass to eastbound M.R. 55 will close on Monday, July 30. The cloverleaf from the Hwy 17 bypass to westbound M.R. 55 will close on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 31 and August 1. The exit ramp from the Hwy. 17 bypass to westbound M.R. 55 will close from Thursday, August 2 to Tuesday, August 7. The cloverleaf from M.R. 55 to eastbound Hwy. 17 will close on Wednesday and Thursday, August 8 and 9. Traffic remains at one lane in each direction on M.R. 55 and on Hwy. 17 in the vicinity of the overpass.

Montpellier Rd. at Wilderness Rd., Chelmsford: Construction on Montpellier Road, north of Wilderness Road, for large culvert installations has been rescheduled to start July 27 to Friday, August 10. Detour is via Hwy. 144 to Larchwood Avenue and Morgan Road for addresses greater than 4200 Montpellier and access to Wilderness Rd., Lumsden Rd., Vachon St., Fire Route E, Nickel Offset Rd., Morgan Rd., Fire Route G and Moose Lake Rd. Access will be maintained for property owners and emergency vehicles.

Old City Hall Lane, Sudbury: Old City Hall Lane will close between Young and Durham Streets, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 27 and again from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, August 10, for a Black Walk Productions film.

Overnight asphalt patching: Overnight asphalt repair will require intermittent lane closures at the following intersections during the week of July 30: Regent at Paris Street, Regent at Old Burwash Road, Elm at Elgin Street and on M.R. 55.

Lillian Blvd. at Shelley Dr., Sudbury: Repairs to Bell Canada infrastructure will close the southbound lane on Lillian Boulevard at Shelley Drive on Monday, July 30.

Kingsmount Blvd., Sudbury: The pedestrian bridge north of Kingsmount Boulevard is closed until further notice. As part of the city's regular bridge inspection program, possible structural deficiencies have been identified and require further evaluation.

Errington Ave., Hwy. 144 to Main St., Chelmsford: Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of August on Errington Avenue, between Highway 144 and Main Street. Improvements include: storm sewer, spot sidewalk repair, curb replacement and asphalt resurfacing. Work will be complete in November. Final surface asphalt will be applied in June, 2013.

Rockwood Dr., Sudbury: Expect intermittent lane closures on Rockwood Drive on Monday, July 30, following completion of storm sewer improvements.

Cobden Rd. at Hwy. 144, Dowling area: Motorists are advised to watch for construction on Highway 144 at Cobden Road.

Charette St., Chelmsford: Partial lane closure Monday, July 30 beginning from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Fitzgerald St. and Hill St. Maintenance in preparation for sewer and water upgrades scheduled for next year.

ONGOING:

Niemi Rd., M.R. 24 to Santala Rd., Lively: Construction is scheduled on Niemi Road, between M.R. 24 and Santala Road. Improvements include: storm sewer installation, replacement of water main, and installation of new curbs and sidewalks.

King St., Capreol: King Street will close between Young and Lakeshore Streets on Saturday, August 4, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the Annual Capreol Days SummerFest. Access remains open for pedestrians and emergency vehicles.

Allan St., Coniston: The pedestrian bridge on Allan Street in Coniston is closed until further notice for inspection of possible structural deficiencies.

Bancroft Dr. at Bellevue Ave., Sudbury: A condominium development south of Bellevue Avenue will require lane closures in the vicinity of the Bancroft-Bellevue intersection. A contractor is working on behalf of a private developer to upgrade water and other services in the area. Motorists are asked to watch for flagmen at the Bancroft-Bellevue traffic island. Further lane closures are planned over the coming weeks, reducing traffic to one lane on Bellevue between Ralph Street and Bancroft Drive. Glen Avenue and Ralph Street will close to through traffic. Residents will be notified of the construction schedule.

Old Burwash Rd. at Algonquin Rd., Sudbury: Traffic will be reduced to one lane at the intersection of Old Burwash Road and Algonquin Road to upgrade services in the area. Work is scheduled to be complete in approximately four weeks.

Vine and William Ave., Sudbury: A scheduled water main replacement, partial replacement of sanitary sewer main and road resurfacing will close Vine and William Avenue, between Gemmell Street and Hawthorne Drive, to through traffic. Access will be maintained for local and emergency vehicles.

Latimer Cres., Loach's Rd. to Hunter St., Sudbury: Latimer Crescent is closed to through traffic to August 31, between Loach's Road and Oriole Drive, for a water main replacement and sanitary sewer improvements. Access will be maintained for local traffic and emergency vehicles. Oriole Drive is reduced to one lane during the week of July 30.

Bancroft Dr., Levesque St. to Moonlight Ave., Sudbury: Bancroft Drive is closed to through traffic, from Estelle Street to Moonlight Avenue, for road widening and infrastructure renewal. Motorists must detour via Hines and Rheal Streets. Access will be maintained on Bancroft for local traffic and emergency vehicles.

Churchill Ave., Falconbridge to Gemmell, Sudbury: Construction on Churchill Avenue, between Falconbridge Hwy. and Gemmell St., is complete. Minor restoration work is ongoing. Improvements include storm sewer, curbs, gutters and sidewalks, grinding and paving, and traffic calming measures.

Brady and Douglas St., Ontario St. to railway underpass: Motorists are reminded to reduce speed and exercise caution on Douglas and Brady Streets, from Ontario Street to the CPR underpass. Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction for water main lining, storm sewer improvements, asphalt, curb and sidewalk replacement. Work will continue until the Fall.

Oscar St., Hanmer: Expect lane closures for installation of a water main and sanitary sewer on Oscar Street in Hanmer. Work is expected to be complete by early August.

Robinson Dr., Southview Dr. to Kelly Lake Rd., Sudbury: Robinson Drive is reduced to one lane between Southview and Kelly Lake Road for water and sanitary sewer main renewal. Work will continue to Fall 2012. Surface asphalt is scheduled for the following year.

Lavoie St., Mayfair Ct. to Montrose Ave., Sudbury: Construction is underway on Lavoie Street. Expect lane closures between Mayfair and Montrose for a water main renewal project, and from Drummond Ave. to Montrose for new surface asphalt.

Fairbank Lake Rd. (M.R. 4): Work is underway for the reconstruction of Fairbank Lake Road (M.R. 4) from Highway 17 to C. Johnson Road. Access through the nine kilometer construction site will be maintained at all times with minor delays at work sites and during blasting activities. By the end of the 2012 construction season, the road will be partially paved with intermittent gravel sections.

Kingsway and Marcus Dr., Sudbury: A new access route is open between the Kingsway and Marcus Drive. The new north-south collector road will improve traffic flow to busy retail outlets in the new Silver Hills Centre and RioCan Centre. It includes sidewalks on both sides for pedestrian access.
