Plans Approved for New Downtown Market Working Group
Released Tuesday, May 14, 2013
Greater Sudbury Council has approved plans for a Market Working Group that will bring a community perspective to ongoing operational decisions for a new downtown public market. The working group will make recommendations through municipal staff to the Community Services Committee of Council and will be funded from current municipal operating budgets for the 2013 season.
“The New Downtown Market Working Group lays the foundation for future potential of an independent agency overseeing the operations of the downtown Sudbury public market,” said Greater Sudbury Economic Development Director Ian Wood. “This is a practical approach to management of the market during the transitional phase of the new development. It engages both stakeholders and citizens in the ongoing success of the market and taps a valuable resource for envisioning future growth.”
Working closely with staff, the Market Working Group will make recommendations for all aspects of market operations, including budget, programming, scheduling, promotions and maintenance. The panel will provide an annual report to City Council based on clearly identified performance measures.
Composition of the working group will consist of one representative each from Greater Sudbury Council, Downtown Sudbury and the Sudbury & District Health Unit, two representatives each from public market vendors and Eat Local Sudbury, and four representatives from the community at large.
The City of Greater Sudbury will provide public notice to invite applications for the New Downtown Market Working Group. Applications should reflect skills and experience relevant to the effective and efficient operation and management of the new market; for example, financial, retail, agriculture, public health, event planning and marketing.
Plans for Sudbury’s downtown public market have been approved by Greater Sudbury Council for a June 22, 2013 opening at the site of the CP/Via Rail Station on Elgin Street. The first phase of the new market will be outdoors under shelter of semi-permanent canopies and modular storage units.
