Mayor Promotes Greater Sudbury on International Stage

Mayor Brian Bigger will seize an opportunity to increase Greater Sudbury’s profile to an international audience this week at the opening of a SNOLAB exhibit in London, England. The exhibit, was designed and constructed by Science North and celebrates Dr. McDonald’s work, which resulted in his winning the Nobel Prize.

“This trip represents a once in a generation opportunity to promote Greater Sudbury to an international audience,” said Mayor Brian Bigger. “While in England, I will be working to build on Council and the community’s economic development goals by celebrating our city’s successes, and building relationships in strategic sectors. My hope and expectation is that this trip will lay the groundwork for future initiatives and raise the curtains on Sudbury on a global stage.”

The Greater Sudbury Development Corporation  (GSDC) contributed $25,000 to the exhibit, which will be on display at Canada House in Trafalgar Square and then travel across Canada after the summer.

“The GSDC was excited and proud to support this initiative,” said Wendy Watson, Chair of the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation Board. “This world-class exhibit offers a unique opportunity for us to celebrate our city’s innovative, resourceful spirit in an international forum.”

Mayor Bigger has accepted invitations from 2015 Nobel Laureate, Dr. Arthur B. McDonald and Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, the Honourable Gordon Campbell, to participate in several events in London. Mayor Bigger will participate in a conference reception with Dr. McDonald and will attend a SNOLAB dinner with prospective future users of the Sudbury facility.

In addition to capitalizing on the opportunity to increase Greater Sudbury's profile on the world stage, Mayor Bigger will work to advance the city's economic development goals in the United Kingdom by assisting Science North in promoting their capabilities for display creation with potential clients and industry partners.

The Mayor will also travel to the northern region of England to promote Sudbury's success in environmental restoration to a post-industrial region that has many parallels with Greater Sudbury.

"This mission fits well with our interest in exploiting opportunities for the emerging cleantech sector," said Ian Wood, Director of Economic Development for the City of Greater Sudbury. "We also intend to cement relationships in the mining supply and minerals sector, support Science North and highlight Ontario and Sudbury as a tourism destination. The Mayor's participation allows us to open many doors and gain significantly more exposure for Greater Sudbury than we could hope to do on our own."
