City of Greater Sudbury Invests in Future Growth of Valley East, Azilda and Chelmsford

The City of Greater Sudbury is pleased to announce the official opening of two new well facilities as part of the Valley East/Capreol water supply and distribution system. The two new pump houses are located at Chenier Street and St. Michel Street in Hanmer.

“Our city is poised for growth and Valley East, Azilda, Chelmsford and Capreol are a big part of that,” Mayor Marianne Matichuk said. “By adding two additional well systems, we are able to further meet the supply demands to residents and businesses in these areas well into the future.”

The Valley East/Capreol distribution system is the most extensive groundwater system within the City of Greater Sudbury. The system consists of 13 wells, supplying municipal drinking water to more than 36,000 residents in Valley East (Hanmer, Val Caron, Val Therese, Blezard Valley, McCrea Heights and Guilletville), Capreol, Azilda and Chelmsford.

“This is great news for our community. I’ve had the privilege of seeing this project grow from being an idea to the reality it is today,” said Ward 6 Councillor André Rivest. “I want to thank Members of Council for their support and for recognizing this project as a vital factor in the continued growth in population and development of our community.”

The City of Greater Sudbury has invested $7 million in capital funding for the project as part of its commitment to supporting and fostering growth in the community.

Background:
In order to address the growing demands of the community, the City of Greater Sudbury retained AECOM Canada. Ltd. to complete a Class Environmental Assessment to examine appropriate measures to address demand. The study recommended two new groundwater sources be added to accommodate the present and future consumer demands. In 2011, Ceccetto & Sons Limited was awarded the contract to construct the two new pump houses. Construction was completed in August 2011.
