Accessibility

The City of Greater Sudbury is committed to and working towards making its facilities, infrastructure and services accessible to all citizens.  Based on the demographics of Greater Sudbury it is estimated that there are roughly 24,000 to 26,000 citizens with disabilities living in our community. Of these, approximately 1,000 are children under the age of 15 and 1,000 are teens and young adults. However, the most significant age group for persons with disabilities is seniors. In the City of Greater Sudbury, there are approximately 11,000 adults over the age of 65 who have a disability.

From recreation facilities, to curb cuts, to the City staff you interact with when you pay your utility bills, we are working toward making Greater Sudbury barrier-free.  As noted in the Multiyear Accessibility Plan 2012-2017, the City has made a number of significant improvements to the accessibility of municipal facilities over the past five years, including installing a second elevator to accommodate larger wheelchairs and scooters at the Gerry McCrory Sports Complex and a newly constructed accessible washroom at the Sudbury Community Arena. Our City’s transit buses are now fully accessible and our Handi-Transit system is fully parallel to the conventional system, and in the last several years the City has also installed four fully accessible play structures and we are working to improve waterfront and shoreline access to our community’s lakes.

While much work has been done to enhance access to municipal programs, services and facilities, there is more work ahead to ensure that all citizens are given an equal opportunity to take part in every facet of community life. Addressing, removing and preventing barriers in accordance with disability legislation will continue to be the top priority of the City of Greater Sudbury.  Enhancing community mobility and access to recreation are also priorities that ensure citizens can enjoy the community’s great Northern lifestyle.

Handi-Transit

Greater Sudbury first introduced its Handi-Transit system more than two decades ago. At present, our City’s Handi-Transit system now runs fully parallel to the City’s conventional transit system. Click here to learn more.
