JANET GASPARINI - COUNCILLOR WARD 11

I believe that to build a strong, economically vibrant community with an excellent quality of life for all, we must put our focus on the people of Greater Sudbury. The determinants of health are those things that contribute to individuals having good health for a long lifetime. While one of the determinants is adequate health care, there are many other issues that come in to play. A good start to life through early childhood development, opportunities for education, enough financial resources to keep one out of poverty, secure, enjoyable work that provides decent pay and some control over the work environment, feeling included and having strong social networks; all of these things really matter when it comes to our health. Research done all over the world shows that people get much sicker, use the health care system much more and die prematurely when these indicators are negative. As a municipal government, we don't have complete control over the policies that determine things like poverty or education, but we can contribute by thinking about people first in our decision making process and by working closely with the provincial and federal levels of government to encourage them to think about people first as well.

This is my second term on Council.  I am honoured to have been elected to represent the people of Ward 11.  I think that the new ward boundaries giving us smaller wards will make the job a little easier.  I expect to have more opportunity for connections at the ward level.  I believe that it is very important for all citizens to be involved in the dialogue about the future of our community.  I encourage you to come to Council meetings, watch them on TV, attend public input sessions, send letters, emails or phone calls.

I will continue to bring to Council a sense of social justice and a commitment to improving the quality of life for all of our citizens. I believe in collaborative, open processes that bring people together and encourage the thinking of many. I look forward to working with all community members to make our City grow into one of the best places in Ontario to live!
