City Council Freezes Development Charge Rates

Greater Sudbury City Council has frozen development charge rates for the period of July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2017. Rates were set to increase on July 1 as part of Development Charge By-law 2014-151. 

“Economic Growth is an important pillar of Council’s Strategic Plan,” said Ward 10 Councillor Fern Cormier. “Building construction and housing starts result in stronger economic growth and play a key role in the future of our community. City Council looks forward to working with residents and stakeholders to support this important sector.”

Development charge rates effective through to June 30, 2017, are as follows:

• Single family dwelling: $15,036 per unit 
• Semi detached: $9,415 per unit 
• Multiples: $9,415 per unit 
• Industrial: $4.40 per square foot 
• Non-industrial (commercial/institutional): $8.98 per square foot 

In accordance with the Development Charges Act, the City of Greater Sudbury collects a development charge, which is levied against new residential and non-residential development before a building permit can be issued. The charges are a source of funding to recover for growth-related capital costs, including water, waste water, roads, drains, police and public safety, general government, libraries, cemeteries, fire, recreation, emergency services and transit.
