Riders' Guide

The goal of Handi-Transit is to provide transportation to persons who have physical disabilities and are unable to use the conventional transit system. This service is funded by the City of Greater Sudbury and user fees.

Using the Service

The Operator will make every effort to accommodate your trips as quickly and efficiently as possible, but please remember that this is a bus service and not a taxi service. Trips may be detoured to pick up other passengers.

If the Operator is unable to accommodate your trip at the time requested, they will inform you of other available times.
Please be ready at the scheduled time, as drivers are not required to wait.

The service operates door-to-door. In the case large buildings such as hospitals and apartments, it will operate to the front door only.

Booking Trips

To make a booking, or to advise the Operator of any change of plans, you may choose from daytime, evening and weekend hours. Five periods of time and two phone numbers follow:

  • Monday to Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. dial 705-670-2300
  • Monday to Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. dial 705-222-6100
  • Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. dial 705-670-2300
  • Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. dial 705-222-6100
  • Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. dial 705-222-6100.

Please try to book all trips at least two working days in advance. You may book a maximum of three trips each time you call.

Cancelling Trips

If you no longer require your booking, you must cancel the trip by calling 705-674-0726. Please use this number for cancellations only.

 

Visitors

Handi-Transit service is available to out-of-town visitors. They should contact Handi-Transit at 705-670-2300 to make arrangements to use the service.

Registration

 

Recent changes have been made to the process to determine eligibility for Handi-Transit. Starting this year, we will ask all clients of Handi-Transit to complete a new application form. Based on the information provided on your application form, some clients may be asked to schedule an appointment with an Eligibility Assessment Advisor (EAA) at no cost.

If you have a physical disability and your application form leaves no doubt that you are unable to ride conventional Greater Sudbury Transit buses, you will not be affected by these changes. You will continue to receive Handi-Transit service as you do today.

If you have physical or cognitive disabilities and may be able to ride conventional Greater Sudbury Transit buses, you will be asked to schedule an appointment with an Eligibility Assessment Advisor. The advisor is an independent professional. There will be no charge to you for your appointment.

If the advisor finds that you are able to use conventional transit, your name may be removed from the full-time Handi-Transit client list. Special consideration will be given to time of year. For example, some clients may be able to use conventional transit in the spring and summer but will require Handi-Transit in the fall and winter months.

If you disagree with the recommendation(s) of the Eligibility Assessment Advisor, you will have the option of appealing the decision to the Hearing Committee of Greater Sudbury Council.

Greater Sudbury Transit has many features that make it easier for individuals with various abilities to ride the bus:

  • Low floors have replaced stairs. One small step up is all that’s required to board the bus.
  • Wheelchair ramps are automated. The ramp is also available for scooters and walkers.
  • Seats at the front of the bus fold up. Each bus can accommodate two wheelchairs at one time.
  • Upcoming bus stops are displayed on a large screen at the front of the bus to help you find your way. Upcoming stops are also announced should you have difficulty reading the screen.
  • Persons with disabilities have first priority for seats at the front the bus. Elderly persons also have courtesy seating near the front of the bus.

Handi-Transit will remain dedicated to citizens who cannot access conventional transportation because of a physical disability. The process to determine eligibility has not changed for many years. It is important to ensure that those who are currently using Handi-Transit are those who need it the most, so that quality of the service does not suffer because of overcapacity.

Complaints

If you have any complaints about the service, please try to resolve them by contacting the dispatcher or Manager at Handi-Transit at 705-670-2300.

If your concerns cannot be resolved to your satisfaction, please contact Greater Sudbury Transit at 705-675-3333.

All complaints about safety issues, including tie down procedures, should be reported promptly to both Greater Sudbury Handi-Transit and Greater Sudbury Transit.
